Small Business Saturday

Michael and I have a weekly habit of watching Shark Tank. Seeing hopeful entrepreneurs stick their necks out to try and gain investors in their company has come to be a true source of entertainment for us.

There is something about giving life to a small, yet useful idea that thrills me. I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I think it comes from my grandfather. He dropped out of school at 8th grade to help open the State Meat Market in downtown Brooklyn with his brothers. Their father passed away during the Great Depression, so he and his brothers opened the shop to support the family. His mother was left with seven children to feed after his father passed away, so the boys took it upon themselves to band together, follow the American dream, and build a livelihood for the family. My grandfather owned the shop until shortly before he passed away in 2004. 

I think what really makes a small business so interesting is how authentic they are. Usually, its an individual with a dream that gives life to that dream and somehow changes the way we live or do things.
