Antique Week: 1950's Chic

The post World War II fashion of the 1950's was characterized by long skirts, fitted waistlines, pearls, gloves, and comfortable fabrics as sportswear increased in popularity. Hair was worn short and curled and hats were essential for ladies.  Fashion was defined by femininity and sophistication. This was a big decade for fashion because after the war, the fashion houses reopened and ushered in a new wave of timeless design and attention to detail (Wikipedia).

As I comb through warehouses of antiques each year, I am continually drawn to the dainty and beautiful items I find from this decade of fashion history. I am attracted to the feminine, yet strong looks, and the emphasis on classic elegance.

Below are some of my all-time favorite pieces.

This is a vintage wool jacket from the late 1950's with three-quarter sleeves and a real mink collar. I found this coat at the Antique Emporium in Strasburg, VA.

I bought this cap, clip-on earrings, and purse from one of my favorite vintage shops called "17" in Staunton, VA.

In my travels throughout northern Virginia, my love for vintage photos and advertisements has grown. A few months ago, at the Antique Emporium in Strasburg, VA, I happened upon a dealer who sells old magazine advertisements. The oldest one I have found to date is from 1941.

In an effort to give my downstairs kitchen and bathroom a vintage 1950's feel, I made these ads into wall hangings.
